Wheels are not something one automatically associates with donkeys (they have hooves, after all) but wheels are what EARS desperately needs right now.

Our rescue work means we sometimes need to transport an injured or abused donkey or horse to our Sanctuary and for that we have a sturdy horsebox BUT.. and it’s a big but, we don’t have a strong enough vehicle to pull it.

Sanctuary manager Penny James, who is a much loved institution in Greyton, uses her own small bakkie to reach animals in need but it isn’t strong enough to pull a horse box. Thanks to the generosity of bakkie owners in Greyton Penny has rescued many horses and donkeys  but there have also been times where we could not respond to animals in distress because we had no way of getting the animal back to the Sanctuary.

We use the horse box to transport injured donkeys and horses or those needing longer term medical care to our hospital paddock at the Sanctuary. Here, the animals receive daily care from Penny and her team. Recently we’ve had sweet little Cassie recovering from a foot injury, read her story here https://greytondonkeysanctuary.co.za/2023/02/cassie-comes-a-cropper/

So, we’re appealing to our supporters, to people who love donkeys and horses, to motor dealers, to anyone willing to part with a secondhand bakkie for help. Any donation, big or small, will make a big difference to our Wheels Appeal.

Prominent Greytonian and horse lover Tabatha King has asked all of her friends to donate to our Wheels Appeal on the occasion of her 50th birthday. What a wonderful gesture! Thank you, Tabatha. We do hope others will follow your generous lead.

It’s easy to donate to EARS. Simply click on the ‘donate’ button on our home page. We’ll keep a running tally of donations for our Wheels and keep you updated here and via Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you for your support!
