Goodbye came too soon this year as we lost our second donkey. On Sunday June 7 we lost our precious Genevieve who collapsed unexpectedly in her paddock, dying instantly. As she wasn’t ill we suspect an aneurysm.

Goodbye after 13 years
Genevieve was the very first donkey at our Sanctuary, long before we were a Sanctuary at all! She was brought to the local riding school which occupied our premises at the time after suffering a serious head injury. Gen had been hit on the head with an iron bar for eating cabbages from her owner’s neighbour’s vegetable patch. Due to her injuries – temporary blindness in one eye and hearing loss – she could no longer be worked so her owner surrendered her to us. A year later she was joined by her son Satchmo.

Genevieve was the gentlest of donkeys
Genevieve has been one of the those donkeys visitors fall in love with. Petite, snowy white with a black mark on her face we called her ‘beauty spot’ and the gentlest nature. She was frequently bullied by her paddock mates but she seldom retaliated with more than a nip. She and her son lived side by side and latterly shared their paddock with our newest donkey, baby Elsa. It is testimony to Genevieve’s nature that Elsa soon became the boss.
We shall miss Genevieve hugely. She leaves a big hole in our heart.
Goodbye darling girl and rest in peace.
