MEET OUR DONKEYS

GENEVIEVE
Genevieve was our first rescue donkey & the reason we started the Sanctuary. She suffered serious injuries after being hit in the face with an iron bar for stealing veggies. She is nicknamed ‘Marilyn Monroe’ & male donkeys love her!

SATCHMO
Satchmo is Genevieve’s son. He arrived with his mom at the Sanctuary but his owner took him back for a year. He was finally surrendered to us after suffering spinal injuries in a battle with a stallion which meant he could not work. His melodic & very loud bray earned him his name.

TONIO
Tonio was confiscated with Lilli in 2018. He was covered in pustules from malnutrition & parasites & suffered multiple wounds. Today he and Lilli share a paddock & will greet feeding time with loud brays of happiness.

PEDRO
Pedro was turned out into the street when he got too old to work. At 40, he’s our oldest resident & still very active though his treats must be cut small because his teeth are worn.

SIMON
Simon has a mind of his own. He chose to live with us despite repeated attempts by his owner to entice him home, even breaking out of his yard to come to us. The Sanctuary was were he wanted to be.

LEILA
Leila came to us as a tiny foal found on the side of the road with series head injuries & partial blindness. Our resident Shetland Pony Jelly Tot helped her heal & the two are inseparable.

ELSA
The youngest member of our rescue herd is little Elsa. This big eared baby was stolen by young boys from a feral herd in the mountains just outside of Greyton. Fortunately, we were alerted to her presence in Genadendal and were able to rescue her. She’s now a permanent resident with us.

HENRY
Henry came to us for treatment of a nasty rope burn sustained while tethered in the mountains. Treatment was lengthy so his owner agreed to hand him over to us. Henry is great with kids, loves a cuddle and is best known for his singing voice.

MILO
Milo was rescued by the Karoo Donkey Sanctuary from a horror auction. He was an angry donkey & it took months for him to trust us. Now he’s strong & confident & loves attention, a brush & a carrot treat.

JOHN
John was a working donkey who was neglected by his owner & terribly abused by a group of children. It took months for him to heal & gain confidence. Since his surrender to us, he lives peacefully with his pal Hugo.

HUGO
Hugo was rescued with John & though he was beaten & overworked, did not suffer the same trauma as John. He is a sunny, easygoing chap who enjoys an ear rub & scratch when visitors come.

NEDDY & DOBBIN
Ned and Dobbin were very young when surrendered into our care. They were in a shocking condition with terrible wounds on their hindquarters which took months to heal. They are almost identical so we presumed they’re brothers. Dobbin is bigger, gentle but shy & difficult to handle. Neddy is gregarious & loves a scratch on his hindquarters.

RIDLEY
Ridley was treated by us for severe lacerations from barbed wire before finally moving in with us full time. It took months for his wounds to heal but today he is healthy and hearty. His ear was cut off by a previous owner in an old-style branding practice.

MAX
Max was used as a taxi between Genadendal & Greyton which took a terrible toll on his small body. He was offered shelter by Greytonians Jeanne & Brian Rae until he came to live with us.

Jelly Tot
Jelly Tot is a Shetland pony who was surrendered to us. We call him our CEO because of his very bossy nature but he was a real sweetheart to baby orphaned Leila when she came to live with us and they remain fast friends.

Billie Busstop
Billie Busstop was discovered at a bus stop near our Sanctuary sheltering from the rain. He was in bad shape, with several injuries and we took him in to help him heal. When no-one claimed him and Penny fell in love with him, we kept him and he’s now a firm favourite with children who visit our Sanctuary as he has the sweetest nature.
