An Olympics fundraiser for EARS and Greyton Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) was held at Old Potter’s Inn in Main Road, Greyton recently and was so successful, organisers plan to make it even bigger next year with a special emphasis on family fun.

An Olympics with a difference
This was an Olympics with old-fashioned traditional games, culminating in a hotly contested swimming gala. Cornhole, where bean bags are thrown at a board with a hole in the middle was especially popular with children, darts and boules drew hordes of more serious adults but the most fun was hammer/spyker where contestants were required to hammer a nail into a log while closing one eye.

An Olympics is not an Olympics without a gala but unlike the other games on offer, this one was not open to public participation but only to two teams each from EARS and GAWS. The gala was held in the long lap pool in the garden at Potter’s and opened by local resident ‘Queen Colleen’ who warmed the chilly water with a teapot of boiling water. Mark the Australian lifeguard, in his colourful outfit, drew much laughter.
Both the men’s and women’s swim teams from EARS won their races, clinching prize money of R4000, in addition to the funds raised from the games and shared with GAWS. Organisers agreed that next year the Olympics would be even bigger and better.
