Gelding is our focus at EARS this year as burgeoning horse numbers in our valley impact negatively on both animals and humans.
Five foals died on our roads last year, and countless horses were injured in stallion fights because uncontrolled breeding has plunged our valley into an overpopulation crisis. Foals have no road sense and because they’re allowed to roam freely rather than stay contained within an owner’s yard, they pose a very real threat to motorists and themselves.
In addition, EARS has had to treat countless injuries caused by stallion fights during breeding season. Stallions will even fight to the death, with mares and foals at high risk in the process.
Gelding is our focus
We believe that through gelding (sterilisation) and therefore population control, we can reduce the risk of death and injury to both animals and humans, and protect our fragile natural environment which is under threat from over grazing. We’re also protecting humans and animals from disease as overpopulation weakens immunity and leads to the spread of disease.
To this end we have partnered with local and external vets to geld as many stallions as their owners will allow. Gelding is expensive but thanks to welfare rates charged by our vets, we believe that with the help of our sponsors we can make a big impact this year.
To this end we’re calling on supporters to sponsor a horse. That horse will then be gelded under their name and they’re assured their money has been well spent. It’s one thing donating to an organisation but far better to know exactly where your money is going. And we issue tax certificates for donations so your sponsorship could earn you a tax break.
